HTC has just launched its new HTC One M8, the successor of the award winning HTC One (M7). The design of the new HTC One M8 is similar to its predecessor but with a few added surprises. We have put the two models up against each other to see what the differences are between them and whether it is worth trading in old for new. Here is the new HTC One M8 vs the HTC One M7 comparison.
The HTC One M8 brings a more solid design and different colours
The HTC One M7 won numerous awards for its excellent design and the new HTC One M8 sticks with the same principals, but changes things up a little.
Both models offer a solid aluminium build and feature front facing speakers at the top and bottom, however the HTC One M8 now comes with a machined aluminium rear that wraps around the sides.
It also offers thinner walls and on the back you will find two lenses instead of one, more about that in a minute. The HTC One M7 measures 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.33mm and weighs 143g, while the HTC One M8 measures 146.36 x 70.6 x 9.35mm and weighs 160g.
Therefore the new model is slightly wider, taller and heavier than the original but only by a fraction.
Additionally, the HTC One M8 will be available in Gunmetal Grey, Artic Silver and Amber Gold from launch, compared to the silver, black and gold offering of the HTC One M7.
Improved rear-facing and front-facing camera on HTC One M8
The camera is where things really start to change up between the two devices, with the heavily rumoured dual lenses on the rear of the HTC One M8 finally revealed officially.
The same UltraPixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture that is found on the HTC One M7 is also present on the HTC One M8 but there is also another lens and sensor above it, a tech called Duo Camera. This lens is said to be for depth perception primarily.
The front-facing camera has also taken a leap with the HTC One (M8), a big one in fact. The new device comes with a 5-megapixel, f/2.0 front-facing camera compared to the 2.1-megapixel offering found in the HTC One M7.
HTC One M8 is faster and will last longer
Moving under the hood of the devices, the HTC One M8 sees an improvement over the HTC One M7 in terms of processor and battery capacity.
Starting with the processor, the HTC One M7 has a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor powering it, while the new HTC One M8 launches with the new 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor.
This processor is also the one found in the new Sony flagship - the Xperia Z2 and the new Samsung flagship - the Galaxy S5. It should mean a vast improvement on how the device copes with every day tasks and larger, more demanding tasks.
Although we didn't find any problems with HTC One M7, we found the HTC One M8 performed quickly with ease and there was no lag.
There is no change in RAM capacity between the two devices, with both the HTC One M7 and HTC One M8 featuring 2GB.
In terms of the battery, the HTC One M8 will come with a 2,600mAh battery compared to the 2,300mAh battery capacity found on the HTC One M7.
We found the battery on the HTC One M7 served us well but HTC claims the new one is 40 per cent more efficient in the HTC One M8 and can last up to two days with core business use.
HTC One M8 adds microSD support and moves to nano SIM
The HTC One M8 is just as well connected as the HTC One M7 offering the usuals including Bluetooth, 4G LTE, NFC and Wi-Fi.
Where the two models differ is not only the move to the nano SIM on the HTC One M8 from the micro SIM on the HTC One M7, but also in terms of storage capacity.
The HTC One M8 takes the storage capacity down to 16GB from the 32GB and 64GB options of the HTC One M7 but it adds microSD support for storage expansion up to 128GB.
There is also 65GB of free Google Drive space with the HTC One M8, although 25GB of free Dropbox space was offered with the HTC One M7 when it originally launched.
HTC One M8 brings Sense 6.0 and Android 4.4
Just like many of the recently announced flagships, the HTC One M8 will come with Android 4.4.2 KitKat from the box, while the HTC One M7 remains on Android 4.3 for now. An update should arrive shortly though.
The HTC One M8 also launches with Sense 6.0, bringing a number of changes and features compared to the HTC One M7, although again, the older device should eventually receive an update to bring it on par with the new handset.
In terms of other features, the HTC One M8 comes with Motion Launch, allowing you to start and switch off the phone by double tapping the display.
There are also a couple of other gesture controls, such as swiping left from the off position will get to BlinkFeed for example.
Conclusion
The new HTC One M8 is a great device, better than the already brilliant HTC One M7.
The camera, battery, processor, display size and storage options have all been improved, along with the build and software.
However, the HTC One M7 is still a great device, and while the HTC One M8 clearly comes out on top when they are put up against each other, the HTC One M7, with the Android 4.4 Kitkat and the Sense 6.0 updates, can still live a little longer.
